East Texas, Part 6
May 25, 2007
The next part of (Almost) Everything I Know I Learned in East Texas is a series of short quirky pieces. Instead of posting them all together, I’ll just do one at a time to stretch it out.
And I also created a category for all this East Texas nonsense, so if you want to start at the beginning scroll down the sidebar, click on the white box under “On The Brain” and click on “East Texas”
New Shoes Make You Run Faster
And other East Texas Phenomenon
Here’s a scenario that took place countless times:
Grandad roars down the road on his speedy bike and parks.
Mitch, my brother, runs out of the house in a new, bright white pair of sneakers.
“Hey Grandad! Look at my new shoes!” He pivots his foot back and forth for better showing.
Grandad whistles low. “Those are some perty new shoes, Mitchell. I bet you can run real fast in those tennie shoes!”
Mitch runs at full speed all over the parking lot outside our house in proud display that what Grandad says is the full honest to God truth.
Over the years, we kids did in fact find that new shoes did make you run faster. Was is psychological? No way. That’s just East Texas. When we moved to Kansas, it stopped working.
